Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a large city-based university with over 20,000 students studying over 200 courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level.
The University was originally founded from a small mechanics library established in 1823 to provide educational opportunities for the people of Liverpool. The institution grew over the centuries by converging and amalgamating with different colleges and eventually became the Liverpool Polytechnic. In 1992, the Polytechnic became one of the UK's new generation universities.
LJMU takes its name from Sir John Moores, the founder of the Littlewoods empire, which has been synonymous with Liverpool since it began in 1923.
