University Centre Oldham

University Centre Oldham (UCO) was officially opened in May 2005 by world-famous actor Patrick Stewart.

The Centre offers a wide range of courses and is a campus of the University of Huddersfield. The University has over 22,000 students and has received government recognition for the quality of its teaching. It is also rated as a top university for student satisfaction.

The University Centre itself has over 1000 students studying for a wide range of full and part-time courses.

Located close to the heart of Oldham town centre, UCO, is a contemporary learning environment with a culture structured around supporting your success. Throughout the campus you will find a number of modern and fully equipped facilities geared towards helping you make the most of your study.

Student Centre

Recently the Centre has undergone a £50,000 refurbishment to accommodate our growing body of students. As well as our welcoming entrance foyer, the Centre now includes a spacious Student Centre which consists of an updated Centre Court Café, serving hot and cold snacks, a student lounge area for meeting up with friends or relaxing and a Cybercafe, giving you hands-on access to the Internet.

You will also have access to student support including the Academic Skills Unit, Careers and Employability Service and Student Services.

New Developments

On top of this the University of Huddersfield has invested £5m in developing the second phase of University Centre Oldham. This exciting building is located next to the existing Centre and will house subject areas that include; Construction; Architectural Technology and Interior Design; Performance; Technical Theatre; Multimedia and Digital Journalism.

Learning Resource Centre

As a student at University Centre Oldham you will have access to a fully equipped Learning Resource Centre and library, which includes a virtual learning environment and networked computers.

There are approximately 12,000 books at Oldham alongside a facility to borrow books from University Centre Barnsley and the University of Huddersfield (a further half a million books). The inter-site requests are delivered on a daily basis between all the sites, access is also available to e-brary, an online library of full-text books both on and off campus.

As well as this you will have access to reports from leading publications, magazines and information from thousands of sources. There are also over 80 magazines we receive in hard copy and daily newspapers for you to consult.

The LRC has recently invested over £40,000 into refurbishments so now not only will you still have the benefit of 60 PC’s and 10 iMacs but you will also be able to use a quiet study area with a further 16 PC's and 16 individual study desks.

All PC's have various specialist software installed such as CAD, SketchUp, Visual Studio and Flash.  There are laser printers, colour laser printers and all the PC’s have DVD writers fitted as standard.  Other facilities include scanners with OCR software, laminating and binding machines and a photocopier.

We have wireless capability at the Oldham Campus and in conjunction with using the new Mobile Service, this allows all students and staff access to the Internet, personal drives, electronic resources and books, anywhere within the UCO campus.
