How do I apply for a place?

How to apply for a full-time course through UCAS

1. Decide what subject and type of course you would like to study.

2. Decide where (which universities and where in the country) you would like to study.

3. Using prospectuses, and university websites, find out which courses you could study.

Investigate entry requirements for each course you want to study.

Contact the university's Admissions Office if you want help in finding out about and applying for a particular course. They will be happy to answer your questions and give you advice.

4. Narrow down your choices to 5 possible courses.

5. Fill out the UCAS form online. Log on to www.ucas.com and click on apply. Then click on "register/log in to use Apply".

If you are at school or college : Your school or college teacher, tutor or careers adviser should be able to give help you and give the password for your school or college.

If you are a mature or independent student : Go to student login and Register as an individual.

6. Once you have completed the UCAS form you can track the progress of your application using the UCAS Track system. As soon as each university or college decides about your application UCAS update your record on Track. You can be alerted by e-mail or by text message.

7. Once you have made your UCAS application, go to www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance for financial help (Student Grants or Student Loans). You don't need to wait for an offer.

8. Each university deals with Admissions in a different way so depending on the university you may be invited for and interview or you may be asked to take an entrance test. Some universities may offer you a place just based on information on your application form.

9. You should receive a Decisions Letter from UCAS with a list of offers from the universities that you applied for. You need to decide which of your offers is your favourite (You need to mark this "Firm Acceptance") and your second favourite (You need to mark this "Insurance Acceptance") and which you will decline. You can accept or decline offers online using the Track system.

How to apply for a part-time course

For part-time courses, including those of the Open University, contact the university directly.

You need to contact the Admissions Department of the university and they will send you a part-time student application form.

It is worth checking with the university about your application and to finding out how they will look at your own experience and qualifications.
