Should I take a year out first?

Some young students take time out - called a 'gap year' - before they start university, to give a break between school or college and university. It can introduce you to the workplace and offer the chance to make some money, or an opportunity to travel. Most universities will offer a place for the following year to any student who would gain from the experience of a year out.

Some students take time away from their studies once they have started a course, but most complete the whole programme at one time. If you think you may want to take time out during an undergraduate course, you should discuss this with the university. For some courses, it is quite difficult to pick up your studies at the required level if you take a year's break.
