How will I learn at university?

You can choose from a huge range of courses to fit your interests. Universities suit their teaching to the subject. Each course and each university will have quite different ways of doing things and you should decide what appeals to you.

At lectures, a tutor or lecturer explains ideas to a large group of students, who listen and take notes. Students take part in discussions when they go to seminars. Some courses have practical work in laboratories, workshops or studios. Sometimes you work together in small groups of students. You may have tutorials, where your tutor talks directly with you, as part of a small class of students or on your own. Courses can include field trips or visits where you can develop your knowledge or practical skills in the real world. The university usually makes the arrangements for these trips, which can be for one day or a few weeks. Some courses include time abroad, this could involve working on independent projects, or collaborating with staff and students from an overseas university. Increasingly, universities use information technology to support your learning.

For some courses, you will work quite independently, using self-study or open learning materials to help you. Distance learning courses enable you to study at home using a range of media, such as printed course materials or computer-based activities.
