Disabled Students Allowances (DSAs)

Financial help is available if you have a disability, a mental condition or a specific learning difficulty. If you have additional costs which arise because of your disability these allowances can provide help with meeting those costs, whether you are a full-time or a part-time student.

Financial support for disabled students is not dependent on household income and does not have to be repaid.

Types of (non-repayable) allowances include :

General Disabled Student's Allowance (up to £1680 per year)

Specialist Equipment Allowance (up to £5030 for the whole course, the money must be spent only on equipment)

A non-medical personal helper allowance (up to £20,000 per year to pay for a helper)

Travel costs arising from the student's disability.

The DCSF produces a booklet which provides information about these allowances. The booklet is called  "Bridging the Gap, a guide to Disabled Students Allowances in Higher education".

Contact them on 0800 731 9133 for a copy - alternatively you can download a pdf copy of the booklet from the directgov website

There is more information in the DSA section in our additional needs section.
