Clubs and societies

University is not just about academic work, most students will join at least one club or society. Don't join too many - you will never have the time. Some of them could boost your cv - others could just give you the chance to try something you may never experience otherwise.

If you go to a university where they don't have the society that you want then you could always set up your own. The Students Union at each university usually has overall responsibility for the societies and often will subsidise some of the events so that activities which are normally too expensive can be affordable.

Most societies tend to be one of the following types:

  • Cultural and religious
  • Departmental
  • Entertainment
  • Political and pressure group
  • Sports
