UCAS Clearing - What is it ?

Clearing is the term used to describe the system run by UCAS (the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service) that advertises all the courses that are still available for students to start studying in September/October.

You need to be quick off the mark because the available places will soon be snapped up !

Clearing starts as soon as the A Level, or A Level equivalent, results are announced (see dates below) and runs until 25th September 2007.

 - Highers results published on 7th August 2007 in Scotland (available online on 6th August 2007)

- A Level results published on 16th August 2007 in England and Wales

You must apply through UCAS first before you can be sent a Clearing Passport. If you first submit your UCAS application form on or after 1st July, or if you have not been offered a place on a degree by 1st July, UCAS will send automatically send you a Clearing Passport and details of the Clearing Scheme.

To be eligible for Clearing you must not be holding any offers from universities or colleges - either because you did not receive any offers or because your offer was not confirmed when your exam results came out.

If you already have an offer, you cannot apply through Clearing unless the university is willing to release you from your commitment to them.
  • If you are flexible about the subject of the course and the location, then Clearing can be a great way to find a place at university or college. However, you will have to make quick decisions and it is essential that you are available in late August to talk to and be interviewed by different universities and colleges.
